There and Back Again

Well, it’s been a whole 2 weeks since we’ve been back from vacation.  If there is one word that can sum it up, then it would be HOT! I don’t think it was ever that hot up by the river.  I’ve been going for 5 years now, and this is the first time it is unbearable, resulting me going into the 65 degree river.  Yes, I went into the river to cool down.

Both David and I took Friday off so we can pack.  Well, you see, David was in Mexico City for work till Thursday and didn’t get home till midnight.  So we didn’t pack at all!  Till Friday morning.  We went on our merry way around noon, and started our track towards Utica, to see David’s grandma. We arrived at Utica just in time for dinner.  Grandma had made pot roast for us.  YUM.  We pricelined a local hotel to stay for the night, and our Little Lady wants nothing to do with the crib, so she shared the giant king size bed with us.

Saturday morning, we met up with David’s mom, Sheryl and dad to make our way up to the cottage we rented, sight unseen.  When we finally gotten there, we were pleasantly surprised.

The cottage

“Hi!!!”

Freighter in our back yard!

Just look at that view!!!!  My breath was taken away and I was excited.  We’ve seen pictures online, where we found the cottage, but pictures just don’t do its justice.   David’s two uncles, aunt, and grandma also came up to hang out for the day, and meet our little lady.  Sheryl made some awesome skewers for dinner and everyone raved about it.  Just look at them!

Oh the pretty food. YUM.

Double YUM!

David’s brother Danny arrived later the same day, and David’s brother Terry, his wife Page and son Colin arrived Sunday afternoon.  By then, it was SUPER HOT.  So hot, our little lady has heat rashes all over her legs :(  So hot, that Dad and I ended up driving an hour to get a portable AC so we can at least cool the main room for the little lady. Of course, the weather didn’t cool down till Saturday, when we were packing to leave.  I guess at least the packing wasn’t too bad.  And instead of describing of all the thing we didn’t do, why don’t I show you what we DID do during the hot weather, minus capturing Colin going into the water, me going into the water, and the movies we saw at Drive-Ins… (we saw Toy Story 3 and A Team on Tuesday night, and Despicable Me on Friday night, they are all good!  totally recommended).

The Oregon Trial – My Version

No, it’s not the game.  On June 11th, David, my brother Paul and I started our journey to Oregon to attend our cousin Virginia’s wedding.  I called it a journey because when I booked us the flight, I realized that there is no direct flight to the part of Oregon we are going.  I would have happily settle for one connection, but the only one connection flight is out of JFK, which I also would have happily settled on, except, it would have cost us $1,200 per person round trip!!!!!!!  Yes, you read that correctly.  If we would have all taken the one connection flight from JFK, we would have to spend $3,600 to get there!  YIKES!  And mind you, I didn’t book last minute!  I was looking in early January!  So I started looking for other options…  Both Bradley and Tweed would require two connections, but Tweed turned out to be the cheapest, and we wouldn’t need to go far from our house (literally it’s a 2 minute drive there) so we opt for Tweed.

Thursday June 11th was a bit grey, but not bad.  We got to the airport, and there was a sign – All flights to Philadelphia are cancelled.  You see, Tweed is just a bit small that they only flight US Airways and ONLY to Philadelphia.  Hmmm…  That’s a problem.  We waited for the nice guy at the counter to help us, and after about half an hour of looking through all other flights from other airport, we agreed on flying out of JFK first thing in the morning on Friday to Salt Lake City, and connect there straight to Oregon.  We’ll get there around noon PST, so I would only miss a little bit of the bridal shower.  The nice guy told us he only changed this leg of the flight, so on the way home, we will still connect from San Francisco to Philly then from Philly to Tweed.  No problem.

We drove home and David’s mom had come to the house to dog sit.  She was surprised to see us to say the least!  I called Priceline to cancel our pricelined hotel reservation (55 bucks a night at Oregon when it’s usually 110 for the three stars!!!) and made a new one at the same price.  Then I priced us a sweet hotel deal for 100 bucks by JFK for the night at a Marriot (usually 200) and we left for the train for NYC.  Well, I’ve taken Metro North a bunch of times to go into NYC, but never had to connect to JFK.  It was interesting taking it all the way out to Grand Central, then had to connect from there via the subway to the airtrain to get to the terminals so the hotel shuttle can come pick us up.  By the time we are settled in the hotel, it was already 10pm.  I guess I just never realized how long it took!!!!

The next morning, we got up around 3am for our flight.  We were quite exhausted.  But the flight to Salt Lake City was uneventful, besides the fact it felt long.  I brought some knitting with me so I was not too bored.  But of course, we only have very little time to find the next flight, which was way over at terminal E, when we landed in terminal C.  ::sigh::  We quickly walk over before I could take a breath.  By the time I got out of the bathroom, guess who I saw?  My cousin, the maid of honor, Tracy! (Virginia’s sister)  And her fiancé Jason!  Apparently, their flight from Newark to San Francisco was cancelled the night before and the airline advised them to take the Newark to SLC Thursday night, spend the night at SLC and catch the first flight to Oregon, which end up to be the flight we are taking!  HA!

The flight from SLC was on time.  We got there around noon and Peter (Virginia’s now husband) came and picked Tracy and I up for the bridal shower, while David and Paul picked up the rental car and went to the hotel to get some shut eyes, and Jack in the Box!  (Side note:  For the East Coaster – Jack in the Box is a fast food chain, and it is VERY GOOD.  They unfortunately don’t have any out here in the east coast, but I wish they do.  Every time we go out to the west coast, David eats almost exclusively every meal at Jack in the Box!)

I have to say, it definitely doesn’t hurt to walk in late with the maid of honor.  It was like the party hasn’t started until we got there!  We ate some food and talk to some family members, played some games and opened lots of gifts.  I got to catch up with my aunts and grandma for a little bit as well.  And I got to see two of my high school friends that I haven’t seen since I graduated high school!

David came and picked me up after the shower, so I can get ready for the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.  We weren’t in the wedding so it wasn’t a huge deal that we attended rehearsal or not, but it was cool to get there early, see where the wedding is taking place, and hang out with family – I haven’t seen them since my own wedding, which was last September.  Although before that, I haven’t seen them for at least a couple of years, so it was quite nice to see them more frequently this year.

The rehearsal dinner took place two blocks away from our hotel.  It was an Italian Family Style dinner and we had so much fun getting to know the other family.  Of course, being in June and in Oregon, the weather dramatically changed from sunny to thunderstorm.  It poured like no one’s business!

[picture of rehearsal dinner]

David, Paul and I left the dinner around 9pm, which felt like midnight for the three of us.  We managed to get him a sugar-free Slurpies on the way back to the hotel and passed out almost immediately.

We got up early on Saturday – not because we are well rested, but because the time difference.  Even after watching some TV and getting ready slowly, we were all ready at 8am, an hour before we are to meet my family for breakfast at the Nunan House (where the wedding is happening, and where my family is staying).  We drove over anyways on a hunch that my family will be up already, which I was right.  We hung out for the rest of the time before heading over to the main house for some awesome breakfast:

[picture]

After breakfast, Paul stayed with my uncle and grandma, and David and I drop off my aunts to the salon where they get their hair done, and we set out to find the yarn stores I wanted to visit.  But first, let me share the knitting related loot from this trip:

[picture of loot from both stores]

The first store was “name”. It was deceiving from the outside.  I thought the store was really small, until I walk in!  It has three separate “rooms” and a garden setting knitting area complete with a water fountain that provides very soothing sounds!

[picture of yarn store]

The lady who helped me was super friendly and let me browse at my own pace.  They have mainly commercial yarn, not much of local yarn, so I opt for a pattern book instead. After I flipped through the pattern book, I just couldn’t put it down!  I’ll definitely be busy making some cute baby clothes for my kid.

On the way to meet up with Paul, my uncle and grandma for lunch, David surprised me and stopped at an alpaca ranch that has a boutique.

[picture of the alpaca ranch]

Unfortunately the boutique was closed, BUT! It happened to be the Alpaca shearing day!!!  Apparently Alpacas get sheared once a year and we stumbled upon it!

[pictures of the alpaca and raw fleece]

I’ve only seen shearing of the alpaca on “Dirty Job” on Discovery Channel.  This was the real deal and it seems a little different.  The alpaca was not happy to be tied up, for sure.  But all the sheared ones seemed happy enough.

We left the ranch just in time to meet my family for lunch.  Just as we got to the restaurant, I got a call from my aunts that they are done with their hair, so David went and picked them up, while we sat in the restaurant and waited.  It turned out that David had stopped and grabbed some Jack in the Box!  (What did I tell ya?  The man loves that chain!)  After we ate, David drove my family back to the Nunan House to get ready for the wedding.  I utilized the little time I have to visit yet another yarn store:

[yarn store pictures]

This place has some commercial yarn, and also some beautiful quilts!  Seeing them only made me want to learn to sew even more!  And they also had some local yarn.  I couldn’t resist and bought some Alpaca to make something for the baby, as you can see above.

We quickly went back to the hotel and changed and came back.  The weather wasn’t looking too good, but it wasn’t quite 4pm so everyone is still waiting.  Of course, the weather didn’t want to cooperate and started raining.  At one point, they were going to have the ceremony right on the open wrap around porch, which would have totally been Virginia and Peter’s style, since they are lay back and spontaneous, but the sky opened up while the decision was being made and they stuck with the original plan.

[pictures of ceremony]

The ceremony was brief and Virginia was beautiful.  I loved her dress and her hair style.  AND I loved her cake!

[pictures of cake]

The food was great and everyone had a good time.  My uncle Ceasar gave an incredible speech and I learned some new things about my cousin that I didn’t know about! Unfortunately, David, Paul and I had to leave shortly after dancing started, since we have to get up super early, AGAIN, to catch our flight out to San Francisco.  We said our good byes and parted our ways.  It was a little sad, but I know it will be okay, because the maid of honor, my cousin Tracy, is getting married in August, so we’ll see the family again very soon.

Sunday came in no time.  We got to the airport with plenty of time to spare.  The only thing that was suspicious was the fact that when we checked in, only the Oregon to San Francisco leg print out, not the others.  I flagged the lady at the counter and she told me because we booked our flight via US Airways, but they are really Sky West, and the other leg was United Airline and US Airways, that’s why it didn’t print out, and she told us not to worry and to check in again when we get to San Francisco.  I knew something was wrong then, but couldn’t figure out what, plus there was nothing we could do at that point.

We got to San Francisco, got out of terminal 1, and walked all the way to terminal 3 for US Airways counter.  It was a good thing that we didn’t check any luggage, let me tell ya.  When I got to US Airways, the full service line was super long.  I went to the No Bag Check line and try to check in via the computer.  No success.  The lady came over to help us.  She looked up our itinerary and told us go to back to United Airline (Terminal 1) to check in because the ticket is in their control.  Okay.  Fine.  I can walk.  Luckily our flight isn’t for another 2 hours.  But as I walk, I’m getting angrier by the step.  I got to UA, went to the bagless line and try checking in, it gave me an error.  The nice lady by the computer checked it out for me.  Apparently, the guy at Tweed had cancelled the whole trip instead of one leg!!!!!!!!!!  We have NO SEATS what so ever on the United Airline flight!  And of course, they are sold out.  And believe it or not, we are now walking back to Terminal 3 to US Airways.

By this time, my frustration level has gone to the new height.  I was walking so fast David had said “Honey, I can’t keep up!”  I had said to him, “Well, you have long legs, walk faster!”  I know he was just trying to get me to slow down and not be mad, but I just couldn’t help it!  How many of these back and forth thing I have to do before someone can help us?  We got to the terminal and we went straight to the lady who sent us to United earlier.  Guess what her response is?  “It says you have seats there!”  At this point, David cut in and said, “Look, we don’t have any seats there and they are sold out, so re-route us now” before I climb over the scale and strangle the lady and be sent to jail.  Then the lady said “Well, you have seats from Philly to Tweed!”  Ok dumb bitch, what good does that do us!?  I rolled my eyes and bit my tongue so I don’t say some smart ass thing and get security called over.  She proceeded to tell us – all flights to Philly are full for today, we can re-route you to Phoenix, and from Phoenix to Philly and from Philly to Tweed, and that will get you home on Monday 7pm.  WHAT THE FUCK LADY!?  Do you really think that we want to connect twice again at this point?  Before I had a chance to say anything, David asked, “Do you have any flights that fly to Philly tomorrow and Philly to Tweed?”  After much computer tapping, she said, “yes, I have a San Francisco to Philly tomorrow at 6am and from Philly to Tweed and will get you there on Monday 5pm”.  Yes, you read that right, if we left on Sunday, we would have gotten home two hours later if we left on Monday.  And we would be stranded in the airport all day since we will have our luggage with us.  We opted for the leaving Monday option, got our flights set up and finally sat down by the door.

I called Sheryl up and asked her to priceline us a hotel at San Francisco.  It didn’t have to be near the airport since we now have a whole day to explore the city.  She got us an awesome deal of $70 for the night at the Grand Hyatt in Union Square!!!!!! She also looked up the rental car and advice us not to get one (we were going to) because parking at the Grand Hyatt would have been 50 bucks for the night!  So we ended up taking BART, the metro system for the Bay Area.

We spent a great day at San Francisco, which I think deserves a separate post, but I will let you know that on Monday, I almost had an heart attack while checking in, because the stupid computer won’t check us in and the full service line was wrapped around so long that we would have missed our flight waiting in the damn line!  I finally got someone to help us and we were able to get home uneventfully at 5pm on Monday.

Lessons Learned?  Air travel really sucks now a days.

Sunny Ft. Lauderdale

Back in May, after MDS&W trip, I had made a trip to Ft. Lauderdale to visit my in laws for a weekend.  Well, technically, I was supposed to do a spouse swap with my FIL – he was supposed to come to CT and go hillclimb with David for that weekend and I would go down to visit my step MIL.  Well, due to school conflict, it turned out that he wasn’t able to go, but I went anyways.  I was in need of a change of scenery.

Ever since I moved to CT, I had developed severe seasonal allergy.  It was so bad last year I not only only have the sinus infection and post nasal drip induced cough, I had developed Bronchitis!  But then after the bronchitis went away, the cough didn’t and my doctor had thought I had developed asthma from all the cranziness going on.  It turned out I had some kind of viral thing going along with the baterial bronchitis and I just needed two weeks of strong inhaler to clear it.  Or it could be the fact that I was relaxed at 1000 Islands shortly after being diagnosed for asthma and made it went away.

Anyway.  So Ft. Lauderdale was a welcoming change since it was still kind of chili at CT and I figured the warm weather will help with this year’s bronchitis (yes, I had one this year again, but it’s viral instead of bacterial.)  I arived late (around 9:30pm) and was welcomed by both in laws.  Sheryl took the long way home so she can give me a quick tour of the area.  When we got bck to their condo, I was already feeling relaxed and better!  Plus she made matzo ball soup for me!  Let me just mention here right now, matzo balls in clear chicken brother is one of my favorite way to have soup.  I know, I am far from looking Jewish, but hey, I just like them!  I must have shoved three of those matzo balls down my throat because a) I was hngry, and b) I haven’t had them for a long time.  And yes, I know how to make them myself, but don’t you think chicken soup made from others for you just taste so much better?  Sheryl and I stayed up quite a it and flipped through some of the old photo albms she had.  It was so much fun to see some older pictures of David.

On Saturday, dad went to school while Sheryl and I had grand plans of eating French breakfast and shop for baby stuff!  We started off with an awesome breakfast at this little French Cafe by her house.  I had crepe with fresh berries and fresh squeezed orange juice, and Shery had pate sandwich.  They were delicious!  I ate it so fast you would think I didn’t eat for days!  YUM.

After the awesome breakfast, we went to Baby Love, which is one of Baby Bargain’s favorite stores!  (I didn’t know that when I went.  I purchased the book afterwards!)  The store is total of 67,000 sq ft!  Yes, it was THAT big.  They have everything you can think of, every brand you know of, and then some!  And we just happened to go when they have an “Additional 75% off on clearance items” day.  We of course snatched some really good deals on onesies.

I had to have Sheryl hold it until I got home since I had a tiny backpack with me as carry-on when I went down.  And this Thusday, the package arrived -

Saturday night, we went to visit Sheryl’s cousins who were having a graduation party for their son.  It was fun and interesting meeting some of Sheryl’s family.

On Sunday, we went back to the French café and bought me a croissant and fresh squeezed OJ for breakfast and we said our goodbyes for our short visit.  I wish the visit could have been longer, but we are both short on vacation days.

New Hampshire

What an interesting trip!  We arrived at Waterville Valley for the Regional Ski races Friday night late, so we didn’t do anything fun.  But Saturday and Sunday was full of knitting and such for me, while David is with the ski teams.

I started my Saturday late, 5 hours later than David.  I was hungry and asked for some advice on where to go, and I was pointed to the Coffee Emporium.  I ordered a Caramel Hot Chocolate and Stuffed Bagel with Jalapeno Cheese and Mushroom.

img_0323

Doesn’t that look good!?  The place was PACKED!  For good reason of course!

After my very full filling breakfast, I set out to find Patternworks.  I’ve always wanted to visit the place, but being in the middle of New Hampshire, it is hard to take a trip.  It turns out it is only about 45 minutes away from where we were.

img_0326

img_0327

img_0328

img_0329

And that’s just some view of the store.  The store is huge!  and packed!  It’s got different rooms full of yarn!  Although I think it may still be smaller than WEBS.  It’s hard to judge since the layout is so different.  I chatted with the nice ladies there and bought some buttons and a tool I’ve been wanting for awhile.

img_0363

Those buttons and the ear wires are on sale for almost nothing!  It was a great find.

I’ve got back to where we were staying about the same time David got back.  We were hungry and took a walk to the town square (a little gathering place by the resort area) and went to a little mexican food take out place for dinner.

img_0334

img_0335

Don’t they look good?  I was so hungry I forgot to take a picture before I bite into the giant burrito I got.  David’s chili was a bit more tomato-y than we both liked, which was a let down, but the rest was absolutely delicious and inexpensive!  I was surprised at the prices for being a ski resort place.

After dinner, we decided to walk around at all the shops and wait for the fireworks.  While we were browsing through the the country store, we came upon this:

img_0338

img_0341

Yup.  It says Bitch.  And I have no idea why.  It is fun to look at though.

The fireworks was pretty but hard to capture.  We tried.

img_0349

We passed out rather quickly after we got back to our room, despite the fact that I only woke up less than 12 hours ago, but apparently, I was tired.

Sunday was a lot less eventual.  I got up around 8, and was planning on going to Inspired 2 Knit & Tea, but due to the fat flakes of snow coming down from the sky rather rapidly, I decided to stay local.  I went back to Coffee Emporium and ordered the same breakfast, but enjoyed a cup of Chinese Flower Green Tea this time, and knitted.

img_0353

That is Icarus in progress.  So far, it is a super fast knit and I’m really enjoying it.  I have since made more progress though, since after I left Coffee Emporium, I went and sat in the lounge of the place we were staying and watched NCIS marathon and knitted some more.

David got out at a reasonable time, and on the way home, we stopped at Inspired 2 Knit and Tea right before it closed.  The owner was super nice and knowledgable on recent trends.  Even though I have said that I’m on a yarn diet, I went away with some local spun and tea:

img_0365

That’s three skeins (750 yards total) of 100% Shetland Wool by McGinnis Brook Farm, from the sheep Lola.  I already have a plan for it.  I think it will become one fo those pretty doily blankets.  The tea is Notting Hall Peaches Supreme.  I haven’t tried it yet, but I think I may break it out tonight.

The drive on the way home, however, was quite interesting.  The snow didn’t stop and it just kept on going.  Until we got to MA.  It became little snow, then turned into rain when it cross the CT border.  Needless to say, we were home safely.

So did you do something fun this weekend?

Vermont

I went up to Vermont with David last weekend for the ski race.  We got up way too early, but way too late for the race on Saturday.  The sky was still dark and I slept through the whole driving portion of the trip.

I sat in the lodge on Saturday since we we straight to the mountain (see above on late-ness) and worked on my Jezabel.  It is almost done, except a few rows on the neck.   The team did decent and we went and have pizza for dinner.

The next day, when the team got up for the race, I stayed behind lounging/sleeping in my pj and in the motel, with the beautiful snow outside, falling fast and furious.  I waited till time to check out, and slowly cleaned out my car and went to White River Yarn and waited for them to open.  I discovered the shop last year around this time and was eager to see Lois again.  I stayed for three hours and then after saying my goodbyes, I drove over to Woodstock for some shopping and also check out Wippletree.

img_0218

I actually got there in time for them to close, so I didn’t really get to see it properly.  I did buy couple skeins of yarn, but I’ll show that at a later date, as the lighting has been bad during the time I’m home and I couldn’t take any decent pictures.

I also went to Thistle Bath and Body to check out their handmade soap.

img_0214

I couldn’t help but come home with some soap!!!!

img_0230

I have super sensitive skin, so I’m always afraid to try soap, unless it is doctor recommended, or I’ve already tried before and that it doesn’t dry out my skin or make me itch for no reason.  So when I saw the soap stack, it was perfect for me to try.  I already started using Green Tea and so far, I love it.  It has a nice scent, mild and subtle but lingers around enough to relaxes you, and my skin feels moisturized after using it.

I only get to really visit the two shops before David showed up.  You know what that means – I’ll have to go again!!! :)

Boston

It has always been my favorite city.  David’s too.  One day, we will move there.  But until then, we try to go there as much as we can, although time always get in the way.

David suggested we go somewhere for my birthday/new year and originally the idea was for NYC.  It’s closer, and the metro north is easy to get to and cheap.  But, we thought about it, and we know if we want to see the ball drop, we will have to be there super early, and we won’t be able to walk around places because we will have to stand at the spot we want for the ball drop, which doesn’t sound too much fun.  On top of that, the hotel prices is probably insane.  So we decided to go to Boston.

We pricelined the Seaport Hotel for the night and were debating if we should take Amtrak or drive in the snow.   I had some points that would get me to Boston but not enough for round trip for two.  So we decided the brave the weather to drive.  And it wasn’t bad!  There were more snow by the shoreline than up by EBF Connecticut.

We had a late start and didn’t get to Boston untl 5pm.  It was SOOOO cold.  With windchill, it was -12 degrees.  We tried walking around the Boston Commons but it was so cold we just duck into a near by restaurant, Rock Bottom.

We were so hungry we chowed down everything!  And you can tell from the pictures that we started eating, then remembering to take pictures!

After dinner, we tried to go to the commons again, and saw the tree and an ice sculpture.

img_0144

img_01451

But after just a brief walk around, we decided that it’s not worth the pain to walk around anymore.  And we went back to our hotel and watched New Year’s Eve Count Down with Carson Daly.  Yes, we watched NYC count down in a Boston hotel…  Oh well.  At least we weren’t cold!  FirstNight cancelled the midnight fireworks because the wind was too strong.  Otherwise we would have tried to go see that when it’s closer to time.

img_0150

The next day, it was just as cold, but the sun came out, so we checked out our hotel and went to Fanuiel Hall for food and took the T to the Prudential Center.

img_0153

We did some quick shopping and left our favorite city, giving us enough time to visit David’s mom and for me to get back for the New Years Day SnB!

We had a good time even though we didn’t get to do much.  But just being away for a day makes it all special.  Hope all your new year’s eve was as special as mine.

Honeymoon, and Tips for Traveling to Europe!!!

I finally got all the pictures done and figure out how I want to present all 900 pictures.  Yes, you read that right, 900.

2008.09.22 – 10.03 Honeymoon in Europe Album 1
2008.09.22 – 10.03 Honeymoon in Europe Album 2

I separated them into two albums because Picasa will only allow 500 pictures in one album max! But we did go for 2 weeks so it’s hard not to have that many pictures!!!

All pictures are captioned (well, most of them anyways) so hopefully you can get some of the thoughts that went through our head as we went through these country.  To give you an idea, here was our itinerary – mind you, a lot of these were last minute ideas since that’s what we wanted. (We rented a big car just in case we had to sleep in the car! :P )

Day 1:  Arrive to Frankfurt, Germany.  Rent the car and drive along the Rhine River and stay in one of the castles on the river.

Day 2:  Check out of the castle and drive to Dusseldorf and met up with my friend Jess, and proceed to scrap Amsterdam from our tentative itinerary and stayed with Jess for the night instead.  Also, pricelined hotel for Paris.

Day 3:  Say goodbye to Jess and Matt and leave for Paris.  Decided on the drive that we will take a detour to Brussels for a few hours before going to Paris.

Day 4, 5:  Paris!!!!  We stayed in Sofitel!!!  Pricelined it for an awesome price!!!  Highly recommend you do the last minute priceline hotel for Europe.

Day 6:  Drive, drive, and drive some more to go through France and go to Italy.  The countryside of France is gorgeous and we drove by Dijon!!!  mmm… mustard…  Gone through Mont Blanc Tunnel and stayed in Milan for the night.

Day 7:  Went to see Milano Duamo in the morning and drove to Venice and stayed at Venice.

Day 8, 9:  Venice!  Not what we were expected, for sure.

Day 10:  Leave Venice, drove through the Austria Alps and back to Frankfurt for the night.

Day 11:  Bye Bye Europe.

Overall we had a great time in Europe.  Paris is my favorite, and driving on the autobahn is David’s favorite.  We probably would never go back to Venice again, although we do really want to go back to different parts of Italy.

So to summarize, here is a list of things we’ve learned while in Europe:

  • People generally respect the traffic rules.  When driving on autobahn, part of it has no speed limit and all the cars that drives slow will move out of the way and when the speed limit comes on, all the cars, including the ones that are driving super fast, will hit the brakes and slow down.  And this also applies to Belgium and France, however, the Italians do not care.  They drive awful and they are right on you like no one’s business.  Not. Cool.
  • Spend more days in Le Louvre.  One day will not give you enough time to see the entire museum.  We want to go back.
  • Mona Lisa is actually not that big of a painting, however, it is the only painting in the entire museum that are enclosed in glass case with a semi-circle railing separate the general population away from the painting.  Also, two security guards were stationed right there.  The other rooms are one guard for each room if not one to two rooms.
  • Venice is very over-rated.  The whole city smells like a toilet and there is no way I would get into a gondola (and it costs 120 euro for a ride!!!).
  • Food in Venice isn’t that great.  If you want great Italian food?  Go to little Italy here in the US.
  • All spaces occupiable in Venice consisted of 4 different business:  *Hotel, Restaurant, Souvenir Shop, Murano Glass Shop.  Reapt from * until end.
  • Parisian food is just as good as you can imagine, and just as good as your friend who went to Paris said.  Love Parisan dishes.
  • Burano
  • Tolls in France and Italy are insane.  If you ever go, take the train.  But drive in Germany!!!
  • Sleeping cart on train is much cheaper than hotels.  If we do it again, we will travel at night, sleep on the train and have lots of fun during the day without worrying about the tolls and where to park!!!
  • Mont Blanc tunnel costs 34 euros each way.  That’s like US $50 to go through a tunnel!!!
  • Read the menu before you order!  Most of places get you on your drinks!!!  We paid US $8 to $9 for a small glass of diet coke in Paris and Venice!!!!
  • Wheeled backpack saves your back!!!!  We bought one from Samsonite before we left and we are so thankful we did.  We get to bring snacks and water bottles and laptop and not kill our backs!!!
  • The all-in-one passes are not always as good as they made out to be.  If you are only staying for short amount of time, consider buying individual pass in each museum instead.
  • Look for deli’s for cheap lunch and dinner in Paris.  The food was great and much more affordable than the restaurants.
  • Italian hotel standards are much lower than the US.  Don’t expect much from a 4-star hotel.
That’s all we can think of right now.  And as a disclaimer, this is purely our experience.  Take it or leave it, it’s up to you.  But just remember to have fun!!! :)  Because we did!

We Are Back!!!

We landed on Friday afternoon and the best man was kind enough to pick us up at JFK.  We were exhausted from the awesome trip that we ended up doing NOTHING when we got home.  Well, not true.  David’s mom came and brought Bruno back (she watched Bruno while we were gone and my brother watched Mick and Vanilla).  We hung out with her a bit with TV and Internet (we didn’t have either in Venice!!!).

Needless to say, the trip was marvolous and we loved it.  Although towards the end of the trip, we were a bit home sick and really miss the dogs, and we also missed the fact that people actually speaks English to us!  We also took lots of picures!  Ok, maybe I took a lot of picures, but I can’t have them all on the blog, so I’ve uploaded them.  But I’m trying to put all the captions on so it’s going to be awhile when that is ready.  So in the mean time, i will distract you with these pictures from my mom#3 Sheryl.

See that awesome bouquet I’m holding during the Rehearsal?  CostumeChick made me that!!!!

(click for bigger pictures!!)

Those are all I got so far, but as more pictures come in I will try to get them all into one place and share them with you.

Catching Up

I guess it has been awhile.  Wedding preparations have been taking over most of my life, so I guess I will give you a list of what’s been happening around here:

  • I switched blog – as you can already tell.  I’m still trying to figure out how to make it pretty.  So bare with me on all the changes that’s going to happen around here.
  • We have two more “new” vehicles.  I gave my old car to David’s mom who doesn’t have any transportation, and bought a ’03 Passat GLS Wagon in Red with black interior and heat seats!  The other one is a Kawasaki touring bike.  David uses as his commuting bike and we ride to go places once in awhile.
  • We went to the Red Sox vs. Yankee Game last weekend.  Yankee killed the Red Sox, but we had a good time, even though it was completely way too hot to do ANYTHING.
  • David made me a raise bed outside the gate, and I replanted all the cantaloupes and only one died, and the rest are thriving!  And my herbs are going crazy!!!  I cut a bunch and gave it to Archiknist and another bunch to another friend at work.
  • I finished Woodland Shawl, but haven’t block it yet.  Maybe this weekend.
  • I started a Schaefer sample and am hoping that I can finish it this weekend.  We’ll see.
  • David is away for his Bachelor Party – White Water Rafting in Maine.  Yes, the man has weird taste for his party, but hey, at least he is having fun.
  • David’s mom and step mom and my female families are in town for my shower.  So excited to see everyone!
  • I had my second fitting for the gown, and this time, I took pictures!  However, can’t post it here since you never know when that sneaky groom is going to read this.  Maybe I will password protect it on my next post.
  • Wedding invitations were done and mailed last week.  I know quite a few family members and friends had gotten them, which is a good sign, since I mailed the whole box of invitation up to the Wellesley Island Post Office so they can hand cancel the stamps.  As far as I know, they were perfect as perfect can be in my standard. :)
  • When we went to the Sox game, we took a detour to WEBS, and WEBS Bead Store.  It just happened it was the Northampton Side Walk sale and I bought a bunch of Classic Elite Inca Print for $2/skein!  Seriously!
  • I joined Ravelympics, which is knitting one or multiple items that is challenging for me during the Olympics.  I chose a lace shawl in 17 days.  Am I nuts?  Maybe.
  • Engagement pictures are coming in the mail.  Suppose to be getting them tomorrow :) .  Can’t wait.

That’s all I can think of right now.  My camera battery had died and I can’t find the charger.  I have been using a back up camera, which is okay, but not as good as my regular one.  I better get going to find myself a charger on ebay or something before I’m completely pissed at myself for losing it.

Enjoy your weekend!

Where Did The Socks Go?

And you say whaaaaaat?

Well… Let me back track a bit. Last Thursday, work sent me to NYC for East Pack Expo. With such a short notice, I decided to cast on a pair of easy socks to knit while I am walking around in the expo. I started them while i was on the train, and once I got out of Grand Central (no photo there… DOH!) I started walking towards to Freefoods for breakfast. While walking, I show my pair of socks around town:

Time Square was a little dark due to the clouds. Oh well. While I was at Freefoods, I had a hard time choosing what I want to eat since there were so many different awesome organic foods there, but I settle for these:

My melon smoothie and mango. The smoothie is made with honeydew, goats milk yogurt, honey and mint, and the mango was infused with agave syrup and mint. I also got an organic bagel with organic cream cheese – SO YUMMY.

Sadly, I would say that’s about the highlight of my expo trip, since the trade show isn’t THAT exciting. I did have one person come up to me while knitting and asked me if my needles were “medical devices”. HUH? Yeah…

Saturday I went to Dream Come True Farm with Archiknist. I swear I thought we were going to melt while we were there – it was SO. HOT. And it still is! While we were there, we saw two Nigerian goats. They were so tiny and cute!

That’s a mama goat!!! Isn’t she cute and tiny? :) She actually provides the milk that makes the soaps the farm sells! So awesome. There are also llamas, alpacas and sheep on site. I was so good and didn’t buy anything!!!

Speaking of anything, a box showed up in my house few days ago:

A drop spindle and lots of rovings! When I went to MDS&W last month, I went to the ravelry party, but due to time constraint, I didn’t stay for the raffle and gave my ticket to Anarchy, who I met during the party. Apparently my ticket won, and instead of keeping the drop spindle, she messaged me in ravelry and sent me the spindle, and threw in some roving for me to try too! Knitters are SO generous! I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but I’m thinking of doing that this weekend.

Another thing I received this past week was this:

It’s the Amish Friendship Bread from Knitsheady. Today is day 9, and tomorrow, I need to split it and bake it and give four of the starters to four friends. It’s a good thing I’m going to SnB tomorrow :) I saw this on the internet a lot, and apparently it’s quite a popular thing to do – although it is my first one ever.

So no knitting to show this post due to these:

I’ve been busy making my wedding invitations. I decided that I really like the one I saw online but didn’t want to pay the hefty price, so I bought whole sheet paper and am making them myself! I want to mail them up at the 1000 Islands so I got less than a month to finish them. I better hurry! It’s a good thing I’m almost done with the cover :) .

Well, I’m off cutting more paper. Maybe next time, there will be some knitting to show, or maybe even garden stuff! :)
