Pattern – David’s Toe Cozies by jennsquared
Yarn Used – 3/4 oz of Schaefer Yarn Anne in Indigo
Needles – Option size 1.5
Gauge – 8 sts per inch
Knit – January 02, 2009 to January 11, 2009
Modification – N/A

David doesn’t like hand knit items.  He doesn’t like the way it feels on his skin, and he’s hot all the time.  He wears short sleeve polo or tee all year round, and needless to say, I was happy in a way that I get to knit more stuff for me.

However, years ago, he had gotten frost bite on his toes, so his toes are always cold.  Right before the skiing season this year, he asked me to come up with something that will keep his toes warm, but not a whole sock that will make the rest of his feet hot.  The toe cozies were born.

It is really easy.  All I did was measured his feet size and used the Universal Toe Up Sock Pattern and my gauge to calculate the amount of stitches to cast on.  I then used the Magic Cast-On to cast on the toe up, and modify it from there.

————————————————

I’ve noticed I haven’t post any food this week.  Well, I haven’t really cooked this week either!  David is on a ski trip so I just ate whatever I found.  Lazy, I know.  But last night, I was craving some real dinner, so I made this Moroccan Style Tilapia with Parmesan Couscous.  I didn’t have coriander, so I used chopped fresh cilantro on the coating instead.  And I didn’t make the mango sauce either, but it was good without it.  As for the couscous, I had couple boxes of Parmesan Couscous, but I cooked it with vegetable broth.  Once it was done (only five minutes!!!)  I added real grated Parmesan cheese with fresh cilantro to tie the flavors together.  It was YUM.

Just looking at the pictures made me hungry and want to make more.

Well…  Not really…

Pattern - Jamie Lee by Laura Nelkin
Yarn Used – 1 skein of Schaefer Yarn Co. Susan in Dahlia
Needles – Harmony size 6
Gauge – 5.5 sts per inch
Knit – December 28, 2008 to January 10, 2009
Modification – N/A

See.  I ran out of yarn.  AGAIN.  ::sigh::  I was so close on finishing too!  Laura from nelkindesigns.cm asked me to mail it back to her.  I gues that’s why it’s called test knitting.  You see, designers usually knit one actual size, and calculate the rest by using gauge and math.  This one was a close call but it’s just a little short on size small.

Laura will be publishing this pattern soon.  I really enjoy making it and would probably make one for myself.

Now, time for another project!

img_0174

Ready to split the armholes!  I will finish this tonight!  I will!!!  Hey!  No laughing there!

img_0173

I had some points I have to use before the end of the year, so we got ourselves a Christmas presents.  :)  Now those fried chickens are gonna be AWESOME!  And fries!!!  Can’t wait! :)

Ok.  Gotta get back to Jamie Lee.  She’s calling my name.

So I joined another round of Cocoa Swap since I had SOO MUCH FUN last time! So here it is!

The Yarn…

1. Do you knit, crochet, or do both?  I knit mostly.  But I crochet when I have to, like when I made Pink Frosting.  Although I do want to learn more crochet stuff though.

2. What is your favorite one-skein project? What item do you find you knit the most of?  Lace shawls I think.  Although I do like socks, mitts and mittens also.

3. Do you like using a particular type of needle or hook? (wood, metal, straight, circular) Is there something you’ve been wanting to try, or a particular size you always seem to be short on?  I love circulars.  And I like wood, bamboo, or metal, depending on what I’m making.  I used to rely on my Denis set, but now I treasure my Harmony set.

4. What’s on your needles\hook right now? What’s your oldest UFO (unfinished object)?  I think the oldest UFO I own is the afghan.  I just digged it out not too long ago while cleaning.  I should take pictures and put it on my project list.

5. What are your favorite types of yarns? Are you allergic to any yarns, or just hate working with something? Anything type/brand of yarn you’ve been dying to try?  I think my favorite has to be alpaca.  Although I also love cashmere, bison, camal or quivet, but they are not as affordable.  I’m not allergic to anything, but I don’t like to wear or work with any thing rough or itchy.  I’ve been wanting to try malabrigo sock or worsted, or I’m always interested in good sock yarn with generous yardage so I can make a small shawl with it.

7. What are your favorite colors? Brights? Pastels? More muted colors? Variegated? Are there that make you want to stab yourself in the eye with your needles?  I love red, and anything fall color.  Although I like blues and purples as well.  But I don’t like mixing warm colors with cold colors.  They give me a headache.  And I definitely don’t like pastels or neons.  I like variegated, but I prefer semi-solids or solids.

8. What is your favorite knit accessory, your fancy needles? stitch markers? your yarn cutter? What do you have TOO many of? What do you wish you had?  I make my own stitch markers and I have a lot of them over the years.  And they are my favorite accessory to my knitting.  I would love to have a needle sizing pendent.

The Chocolate

1. Do you prefer boxed/packets, or something homemade?  I like both, but I usually have boxed/packets – my usual brands are Swiss or Land O Lake.

2. Marshmallows or whipped cream?  Marshmallows!  Whipped cream made me sick.

3. Do you use any ‘add ins’?  Not usually.  I usually drink it at work.  However, I love bailey’s or peppermint schnapp.

4. Are you a year round cocoa drinker or just in the winter months?  I’m definitely a year round cocoa drinker.  I drink it like coffee for others.

5. Do you like flavored cocoas or are you just a ’straight chocolate’ kind of person?  I don’t like fruit flavors such as raspberry or orange, nor do I like dark chocolate, but I love original, hazelnut, French Vanilla and so on.

6. Do you enjoy cocoa from restaurants or shops like Starbucks? What are some of your favorites?  I don’t like them too thick so it really depends on who made it.

7. You’ve just made the perfect cup of cocoa – is it in a thick mug, or a thinner cup? Where would you sit to drink it?  It would be in one of the mugs that we aquired through our travels.  So sometimes they are thin, sometimes they are thick.  I would sit on my recliner couch to drink it.  Although I usually drink hot cocoa at work.

8. You’re enjoying that perfect cup, what treats will you enjoy with it? Are they sweet or salty? Crunchy? Soft and flaky?  I would love a good croissant, with sweet cream or not.  I also like crunchy cookies or good biscottis.

It’s all YOU!

1. Do you have other hobbies like spinning or scrapbooking?  I would love to get more into wheel spinning or dying my own roving/yarn.  I scrapbook but not regularly.

2. Do you collect anything?  I collect yarn, of course, and pigs.  I like piggies.  I also collect stuff with Great Pyrenees on it.  I also like pretty, fancy papers.

3. What is your favorite part of Winter?  The fact that I can wear sweaters and scarfs!  I also like snow, but only light dusting.

4. What sort of scents do you enjoy? Any difference in what you like for your house versus what you like for your body?  I like earthy scents and lavender.  Although I like good citrius scent as well.  And Peonys is a new scent that I like.

5. Are you allergic to anything?  Just shellfish.  But I’m sure no one will send me that via swap mails. :)

6. Are you on Ravelry? What’s your ID?  Yup.  jennsquared.

7. How would you spend an ideal winter afternoon/day?  I would be in my pjs with a warm blanket on me, sitting on my recliner couch with my sweetie and watch a good movie/tv series or a good book.  With knitting also of course.

8. What’s your favorite animal?  Dogs and Pigs!

There you have it.  You can learn more about me by clicking on “me” or “swap questionnaire” category on the sidebar.  One of these days I will organize it and group them all into a tab above.

She is my new love.  She is beautiful, sexy, yet delicate.  She is my favorite by far.

See?  Isn’t she pretty?  I’m making her for Schaefer Yarn.  Actually, I need to get my groove on and finish her before the week end so I can mail it to Schaefer in time for TNNA!!!

I’ll be sad to see her go for sure.

I want to give a big shout out to PinotNoir, who rescused Jezabel by parting with two balls of Louisa Harding Kashmir DK.  She not only part it, but gifted them to me as birthday present.

And another thing I’ve recieved but forgot to take a picture because it was so darn cute, I used it immediately after I got home:

img_0168

It’s a little salt dish in piggy shape!  Anphoe gave it to me at the party!  It is so cute!  LOVE IT!  Now I don’t have to risk dumping lots of salt in one shot!

Well, time for me to relax after my first day back to work.  Hope you all had a great Monday!

Periodically Anphoe would invite a bunch of us over to her house to knit, eat and play.  The first time we went there, we were there till 2am!  We had a blast playing guitar hero then, but this tme, Anphoe has Rock Band 2!!!

img_2117

David joined me this time and we arrived early so I can make Chicken Piccata.  All the food were great and yummy.  And right before we moved over from the kitchen table from food to play rock band, the girls suprised me and Knelley with some birthday presents!

img_0166

I had the piggie theme and Knelley’s were balls! :D   Thanks girls!!! :)

Rock Band was a lot of fun, like always.  I even tried the drums this time.  And I had a picure to prove that I had the longest note!

img_2160

See, player 2!  That’s me!

We all had a great time!  Thanks Anphoe for hosting us!

I’m sure people are sick of looking at reviews and resolutions by now, so I’ll keep mine short and sweet -

1.  2008 was most important to David and I because we had our wedding.  And of course, being a knitter, I have to make something!

wedding

From left to right:  Wedding Basket, Lehmus-huivi, Woodland Shawl, Kiri, and Moondance.

2.  I joined Sock Knitters Pentathlon 2008, in celebration of the Summer Olympics.  Not my favorite thing to do, but I finished none the less.

skp

From left to right:  Sock 5 – Olympic Medals, Sock 4 – Ziggy, Sock 3 – Rattlesnake Creek, Sock 2 – Berlin Muster, Sock 1 – Jacobean.

3.  Needless, to say, I participated in the Kntting Olympics.  I knitted Lehmus-huivi for it.  Full size lace shawl in 17 days – if you’ve told me that two years ago that I would be able to do this, I would look at you like you have five heads!

4.  I knitted lots for Schaefer this past year also.  But mostly small items because of all the wedding knitting.

schaefer

From left to right, top to bottom:  Market Bag in Laurel, Market Bag in Susan, Collared Children Cardigan, Hooded Children Cardigan, Laurel Summer Bag, Undulating Wave Scarf Swatches, Honeycomb Socks.

5.  Of course, I also knitted some other things that can’t be categorized by the above three.

misc

From left to right, top to bottom:  Christmas Ornaments, Rusted Root, Blanket Square, Red Sox Socks, Winter Blues Piggy, Irish Hiking Scarf.

I look back to my resolution from the beginning of the year and this is what it says:

For 2008, here are some of the things I would like to accomplish:

  1. Finish all the wedding knitting on time.  I finish all the wedding knitting on time!!!
  2. Reduce 20% of my stash by making more projects.  I don’t think I reduced much of the stash – partly because I knitted a lot of stuff for Schaefer and I kept on getting paid in yarn!  Not like that’s a bad thing…  but it certainly didn’t help with this goal.
  3. Finish Irish Hiking Scarf.  I finish Irish Hiking Scarf!!!
  4. Finish Secret of the Stole I.  I didn’t finish SotS I, nor II, nor III.  Maybe this year I’ll check out the whole pattern and see if I even want to do it!
  5. Finish Aspen Top Down Sweater.  I didn’t finish Aspen Top Down Sweater.  I got distracted with other items and it just sat in my little cubby waiting to be finished.
  6. Continue to model knit with Schaefer – although I really need to manage it so I don’t overwhelm myself.  See #2.  I think I accomplished this.
  7. Start Autumn Rose Pullover – Fair Isle here I come!  I did try out fair-isle, but not on Autume Rose.
  8. Felt something. May it be clogs or bags.  I felted my wedding basket!  It was a lot of fun!
  9. Learn to spin if we move and have more room.  We didn’t move this year, so no room to do spinning.
  10. Learn to dye if we move and have more room.  See #9.  No room to dye.

I completed 4 items, 2 items didn’t get completed because the condition didn’t meet.  So 50% completion – not bad!  I suck at completing any resolutions so I’m pretty proud of myself.

Lets see my other resolutions:

  1. Be nice. Not to say I’m not nice, but sometimes I’m not, especially when I am losing my patience, which leads to no. 2.  I think I accomplished this somewhat, but not to the level I wanted to be.
  2. Be patient.  This is definitely still a WIP.  Patience is NOT my virtue.
  3. Complete all wedding details by mid-August. We’ll see how this one goes…  I completed this with flying colors, if I do say so myself!  Everything went smoothly and everyone had a great time!
  4. Experiment with gluten free cakes – maybe I can make the wedding cupcakes?? Or at least have the recipes to do it? We tired Baby Cakes at NYC, they were good, but we weren’t completely thrilled with them.  I scrapped that idea and ordered a gluten free cake from TN for our top tier and bought Vanilla and Chocolate cupcakes from a local baker.  YUM.
  5. Spend more time on my business. I know I can do it, but it’s the motivation part of it… Knitting? Work? hmmm which one to pick?  I decided to not do the financial business anymore.  I wasn’t having fun.  Yes, I know it’s a job, but I already have one!  I want to have fun with what I want to do.  I am still planning to open a yarn store, just not sure the timeline now since we are in the process of buying a house and that probably will put a damper on things.

There you have it.  My 08 in review.   What about my 09 resoultuions,  you ask?  Well, I think this is what I want to do this year:

  1. Knit more things for me.
  2. Cook more.
  3. Start that Autume Rose sweater!!!!
  4. Finish the Aspen Top Down Sweater.
  5. Try Thrummed Knitting

Ok.  A shorter list, in hope of I actually do all of it!

Have a healthy, peaceful, safe and happy 2009!

It has always been my favorite city.  David’s too.  One day, we will move there.  But until then, we try to go there as much as we can, although time always get in the way.

David suggested we go somewhere for my birthday/new year and originally the idea was for NYC.  It’s closer, and the metro north is easy to get to and cheap.  But, we thought about it, and we know if we want to see the ball drop, we will have to be there super early, and we won’t be able to walk around places because we will have to stand at the spot we want for the ball drop, which doesn’t sound too much fun.  On top of that, the hotel prices is probably insane.  So we decided to go to Boston.

We pricelined the Seaport Hotel for the night and were debating if we should take Amtrak or drive in the snow.   I had some points that would get me to Boston but not enough for round trip for two.  So we decided the brave the weather to drive.  And it wasn’t bad!  There were more snow by the shoreline than up by EBF Connecticut.

We had a late start and didn’t get to Boston untl 5pm.  It was SOOOO cold.  With windchill, it was -12 degrees.  We tried walking around the Boston Commons but it was so cold we just duck into a near by restaurant, Rock Bottom.

We were so hungry we chowed down everything!  And you can tell from the pictures that we started eating, then remembering to take pictures!

After dinner, we tried to go to the commons again, and saw the tree and an ice sculpture.

img_01451

But after just a brief walk around, we decided that it’s not worth the pain to walk around anymore.  And we went back to our hotel and watched New Year’s Eve Count Down with Carson Daly.  Yes, we watched NYC count down in a Boston hotel…  Oh well.  At least we weren’t cold!  FirstNight cancelled the midnight fireworks because the wind was too strong.  Otherwise we would have tried to go see that when it’s closer to time.

img_0150

The next day, it was just as cold, but the sun came out, so we checked out our hotel and went to Fanuiel Hall for food and took the T to the Prudential Center.

img_0153

We did some quick shopping and left our favorite city, giving us enough time to visit David’s mom and for me to get back for the New Years Day SnB!

We had a good time even though we didn’t get to do much.  But just being away for a day makes it all special.  Hope all your new year’s eve was as special as mine.
