Archives for the month of: November, 2008

Well, I didn’t finish yet!  I started yesterday after finishing off the bag.  Instead of browing through Ravelry, I decided to go through some of my pattern books and see if there is anything I wanted to make with the yarn I already have – and Bingo!

img_0033

The cover picture sweater is made with Louisa Harding Kimono Angora Pure, and in the pattern book, suggested yarn choices are Angora, Kashmir DK and Grace. (Ravelry is linking Karabella Magerite, which is weird, but whatever, it’s DK)  Well I just happened to have some Kashmir DK around :)  Right on gauge too!  I’m cruising on the back panel.  Can’t wait to have my new sweater :)

Time for din din!

To all your family and friends.

That is our lovely honey brined smoked turkey.  We’ve made this turkey ever since my brother moved here in 2004.  We saw it on Good Eats from foodnetwork and just couldn’t resist to light smoking flavor of the hickory.  Plus!  It frees up our oven!  How sweet is that!?

img_0026

CostumeChick and Evad came to our shingdig since they couldn’t go home for the holidays this year due to work.

img_0028

David’s mom came too :)  And our friend K & M showed up around dessert time to hang out, but I forgot to take a picture of them while they are there.

And from the picture, you can see our lovely dinner.  Here is the menu and links of recipes:

  • Sausage and Herb Stuffing (I made gluten free corn bread and used that instead of regular bread.  Also, I skipped the dried cranberries since David doesn’t like it.  But I bet it’s good if you put it in!)
  • Holiday Spiced Sweet Potatoes (This is such a yummy twist of the regular sweet potatoes!!  I used Trader Joe’s Organic sugar instead of brown sugar since that’s all I have on hand.  But I bet you can use Demerara sugar and it’s just as good.)
  • Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes (I made this up – I used buttermilk instead of regular milk and it turned out awesome.)
  • Cranberry Sauce (I made this for the past two years and I can’t say anything bad about it.  The only thing is that I don’t know what to do with the leftovers!  I’ll have to look up that this year!)
  • Green Beans with Pancetta and Shallots (This is a good quick sautee.  Although I think with all the confusions, I forgot to put the shallots.  Opps :P )
  • Roasted Broccoli: Barefoot Contessa Style (I don’t actually have the cookbook.  I saw this on Amature Gourmet’s blog and couldn’t resist but make it for the Thanksgiving dinner.  It is SO GOOD.  I made the Amature Gourmet’s version though.)
  • Chinese Sweet Rice Stuffing (I can’t begin to tell you how to make this since my brother whipped it up.  My grandmother always made this for Thanksgiving at home and we both love it so much we have to have it.  Good thing my brother knows how!)
  • Mulled Apple Cider (I was going to make this.  But I found mulled cider spice bags in the supermarket that included everything in the recipe and all I had to do is drop the spice bags in with the gallon of cider and put them in the slow cooker…  yeah… it was easy AND good!)

And CostumeChick made a killer gluten free pumpkin pie that was sweetened with honey.  SO YUMMY.  And yes, we got a ton of leftovers!!!  What have we done with the leftovers?  Hmmm…  Let’s see…

  • Holiday Spiced Sweet Potatoes –> Sweet Potato Pancakes (1 egg, 1 cup of rice flour, 1/2 cup of sweet rice flour, mix well and form pancake shape on your griddle or big flat pan with butter!  Oh, you can use all purpose flour isntead of the above gluten free options)
  • Sausage and Herb Stuffing –> We reheated this in the oven and heat up the Trader Joe’s Creamy Corn and Roasted Pepper soup and eat them together for lunch.
  • Turkey –> Part of the meat will probably go into a Turkey Shepards Pie with the leftover potatoes.  The bones will make Turkey Stocks.  Turkey Stocks will probably turn into Wild Rice Soup, which usually use chopped ham, but I think we’ll use leftover turkey this time to try it out.
  • Green Beans and Broccoli –>  They will probably stay as side for another meal, maybe steak or pork chops!

So if you have ANY ideas what to do with leftoever cranberry sauce, let me know!  Maybe a dessert of some sort?

Oh, and see what I found in the supermarket?

img_0021

That is damn good.  I still need to try the Sugar Cookie Eggnog!  The pumpkin one is great (I tried it last year!)

Now that we are done talking about food, which seem to be happening a lot lately, we should talk about the highly anticipated SHOPPING.

Everyone knows black friday supposedly has the best deal EVER for the whole year.  It marks the beginning of the Holiday Season and the start of holiday shopping.  I go every year, although I don’t stay up all night and go to the midnight sale.  This year, I needed some winter skirts and pants for the new job (which I found and got) and of course, Coach.

img_0029

Meet my new Coach purse.  Isn’t it pretty? :)

So yeah…  That’s all I got so far.  Oh!  And I finished the market bags for Schaefer, but I forgot to take a picture before I mailed it out.  I finished it this morning at 11am and I wanted to make sure it gets mailed with the mail wagon today instead of Monday so I rushed it into my mailbox with Clip-n-Ship, which by the way, is the best service EVER invented!  I’m still in my PJs and I mailed the box to Schaefer!

So now I’m off to ponder which project to start next…  Hmm…  Central Park Hoodies? Rogue? Olive Branch Hoodie? Celtic Icon? Sage Cardigan?  Oh the agony of choosing…  Only if we have more time in a day!

So…  I didn’t formally announce this before, but I quit my job and jump into another one.  I started working at SIkorsky Aircraft today.  For those of you who has no idea what Sikorsky is or what they do…  Well, they, or shall I say we, make helicopters.  I work on specifically the Seahawks of Navy Program.  It is quite interesting and it looks like these babies are going to keep me B.U.S.Y.

Besides the new job, I don’t have much of anything going on.  I’m still knitting the market bag for Schaefer, but it’s almost done.  But until then, I’ll distract you from something I saw from my friend Robin‘s blog…

I must look like a retard taking pictures of gas station signs…  And!!!

img_0017

Less than 50 bucks to fill my tank!!!!  That, ladies and gentlemen, is amazing.  I am totally psyched! :)

I know, I know.  But I promise there are some knitting content in this post!

A New Stew

Whenever I made beef stew, I got my staple recipe that I go to everytime.  I make it so much I know it by heart.  And it never fails.  But today, while I was browsing around, I saw another recipe - Beef and Butternut Squash Stew, and I couldn’t help but give it a try!

img_0010

I subsitute the marsala wine with some apple cider, although when I googled for good subs for the wine, it said grape juice.  I supposed it made sense, but I had apple cider on hand and I know it will work.

I will definitely make this again, but I will probably put the butternut squash when there is half an hour left for the stewing so it doesn’t completely full apart on me.  Or I will try my staple recipe’s trick – sautee the butternut squash in a separate pan until the edges are golden brown.  I’ll update the next time I make this.

Gluten Free Meatloaf

Since we are talking about food, I might as well show off my last weekend’s dinner – Meatloaf.

img_9987

I used the meatloaf mix from a sale I got and there were way too much meat, so I made two of them instead.  Also, I made them with cooked rice isntead of bread crumb so David can enjoy this as well.  One more thing – no tomato of any kind is in this meatloaf.  I made a honey glaze instead and it was good!

Sadly, I can’t find the link that I got the recipe from, so I can’t credit the awesome recipe maker.  But I will quickly share what I made here:

Meatloaf

  • 2 lbs meatloaf mix (or ground whatever…)
  • 3 cups of cooked rice
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worstershire Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Steak Seasoning
  • 5 strips of bacon (or whatever you need to cover the top of the meatloaf)

Honey Glaze

  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 1 dash of worstershire Sauce
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1/4 tsp of pepper

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees

2. Mix all ingredients for the meatloaf together, and shape it in the meatloaf form.  You can use a loaf pan to shape it and then turn it out onto the baking pan, but I was lazy and I didn’t want to clean another item.

3. Cover meatloaf with the bacon strips

4. Mix the honey glaze and brush it on top of the meatloaf and bake for 1 hour or until done (150 degrees).

Go visit here to see the knives give-away!!!

Turkey Sighting!

In my driveway!  So weird.  There were two but I didn’t get both at the same picture.

Knitting!

See!  There ARE actual knitting content in this blog!  Although I’m still making the Schaefer bags.  New development on that though.  I received words that the handle is no good, so I ripped it out and fixed it.

img_0012

Now you can’t even tell which one is which!

And I started the Laurel bags – same pattern, just using a different yarn.  I finish one already and am currently on the second one:

img_0015

Almost done.  Once it’s done, I think I’m going to make something for myself.

… besides YUM.

Gluten free pie crust so David can eat it too!  Served with pumpkin ice cream.  Can’t get any more fall than that.

‘Nuf Said.

My new pair of socks!

img_9983

Pattern – Olympic Medal Socks by Frau Hugs
Yarn Used – 238 yards of Schaefer Yarn Co. Anne in Indigo
Needles – Option size 1.5
Gauge – 8 sts per inch on size 1.5
Knit – November 01, 2008 to November 08, 2008
Modification – I reduced one pattern repeat for the front of the socks, so total stitch count is 58 sts instead of 66 sts called for.

I LOOOOVE this pattern although at times it was a bit hard to read it since I’m not a “read the pattern” girl and the pattern has a lot of “reading” and it just ain’t my thing.  Also I draw over the chart to use symbols I’m more familiar with :P  But it helped me speed up the whole chart reading process though.

The Sock Pentathlon officially ends with the fifth socks finished.  I had some frustration with this whole competition thing and would probably never do it again, although I *almost* thinks this one beautiful pattern was *almost* worth it.  (If this even make sense!)

Next show off are the Market Bag I’m making for Schaefer -

img_9879

Pattern - Ashlee’s Market Bag by Ashlee McCaskill
Yarn Used – 1 skein of Schaefer Yarn Co. Susan in Althea Gibson
Needles – Option size 8 & 9
Gauge – N/A
Knit – October 20, 2008 to November 08, 2008
Modification – N/A

I was suppose to make three of these out of one skein, but it didn’t quite made even two bags!!!  Let me show you:

img_9985

See how the top one is smaller than the bottom one?  yeah…  I made the first one 19 inches long using the Turkish stitch, which is the mesh design, but by the second one, I barely had enough yarn to even make 19 inches.  So I emailed Schaefer and it turned out it was suppose to 19 inches total.  Oh well.  As you can see, the handle of the second one isn’t quite the same color of the body, that’s because it’s not the same yarn!  I ran out and I didn’t want to frog back so Archiknist suggested using a complimentary yarn to make handle.  And I have to say, I like that better than the first bag for sure.  Hopefully Schaefer likes it too.

And yes, Mick really wanted to be in the picture!

Now onto the Laurel Bags…  Only if I can find the damn pattern!  I’ll never clean anymore!  Yeah! :P

Did you?

This is the second election I voted since I got my citizenship.  I didn’t count the first one because it was absentee and I didn’t really understand the meaning of my action.  It wasn’t a presidential election either.  But I have to say ever since I’ve became a citizen of the United States (October 2001 – right after 9/11 happened) I voted in every presidential election.

Being a woman, I am very grateful that I have the right I have now.  I can not imagine not able to vote.  It’s like telling me that I can’t be an engineer because it’s a man’s job!

So exercize your right as a citizen of United State of America.  It is my previledge to be part of this great country.
